Illinois Unemployment Law Protects Victims of Domestic Violence. Chapter 820 Illinois Codified Statutes 405/601 provides that leaving work due to circumstances resulting from being a victim of domestic violence as defined in Section 103 of the Illinois Domestic Violence Act of 1986; is good cause, provided such individual has made reasonable efforts to preserve the employment. To meet criteria as a domestic violence victim, you should provide your employer with written notice of the reason for leaving; and provide the unemployment office with (A) an order of protection or other documentation issued by a court; or (B) a police report or criminal charges documenting the domestic violence; or (C) medical documentation of the domestic violence; or (D) evidence of domestic violence from a counselor, social worker, health worker or domestic violence shelter worker.
